man wonders what is psychotherapy

You've likely heard that psychotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for substance abuse and other disorders. However, what is psychotherapy? You can find out what to expect below.

What Is Psychotherapy?

The term "psychotherapy" is the same as talk therapy, counseling or just therapy. It refers to a range of treatments for emotional and mental health issues such as substance use disorder. Other examples include depression, family issues, and low self-esteem.

There are many forms of counseling, and each takes its own approach. Cognitive behavioral therapy, group counseling, and family therapy are only a few examples. Your therapist can determine the type of therapy that's right for you.

The purpose of therapy is to help you understand your feelings and what makes you anxious, depressed or happy. This knowledge can help you cope with difficult events or situations. Then, you can regain control of your life.

Therapy also involves communicating with a therapist to relieve emotional distress and find solutions to problems. You'll experience positive results if you're eager to change your behaviors and thought patterns. The majority of people attend sessions for less than one year, but continuing the treatment keeps you on track.

What Happens During Therapy?

Therapy for substance abuse can occur in inpatient and outpatient settings. In most cases, a drug and alcohol rehab center will schedule inpatient sessions multiple times a day. However, the schedule for outpatient sessions will differ depending on your needs. In general, each session lasts 45 to 60 minutes.

Everyone's experience will differ depending on their needs. Your therapist will still follow a general guideline, though.

The First Session

So what is psychotherapy when it comes to their sessions? Your first session will begin with a discussion about your background and why you want treatment. Your therapist will get to know you and your needs to determine which counseling techniques will help you. The first session is also a good chance for you to get to know your therapist. Make sure that you understand and are comfortable with how the therapist will help you reach your treatment goals.

Don't be afraid to ask questions or voice any concerns during the first session either. You can agree or disagree with your treatment goals and procedures before the treatment begins.

Following Sessions

You'll discuss your feelings and thoughts in every session. Your therapist will help you recognize the distorted thoughts and unfounded feelings. Then, the therapist will guide you to develop coping skills and techniques that change these negative elements.

Between sessions, your therapist will likely ask you to complete homework. This work involves practicing skills or doing activities that build on what you learn during the sessions. In the next meeting, you'll talk about whether or not you completed the homework and the results.
