“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tiptoe if you must, but take the step.”
– Naeem Callaway
Our minds are multi-faceted and complex things. Unlike other organs, which have a default way of functioning for everyone, our minds are unique.
Then why do some addiction treatment programs approach mental healing as if one option will work for everyone? If it can take months or years to recover from some physical ailments, why do some places advertise that a lifelong condition can be healed rapidly?
There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery, nor is there such thing as a “quick fix.” A good, quality substance use disorder treatment is most successful when it’s comprehensive and doesn’t try to “rush” the process.
Our team at San Antonio Recovery Center provides quality treatment to Texan communities. We’re committed to your long-term success, which is why we have the largest alumni network in the city. Let’s talk about our approach to addiction therapy and how it can benefit you.
In 2022, over 3.5 million Texas residents aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder. That’s more than the population of San Antonio and Dallas combined. Each of these people who are living with a substance use disorder (SUD) has their own needs when it comes to healing. A person in their 20s who’s struggling to pay rent while seeking out heroin won’t have the same healing needs as a 50-year-old whose partner is threatening divorce because of their methamphetamine use.
SUDs impact every corner of a person’s life and trickle out into the lives of those closest to them. It influences your physical health, your mental health, your finances, your self-care, and more. That’s why it can feel so daunting to step away from it. How can you possibly find healing that will address all of it? How can you rework your life into something you want again?
We’re here to tell you it’s possible. We’ve seen thousands of people lead lives of recovery, and we will help you do the same.
No matter what level of support you’re in, from our residential program to our outpatient program, you will find the same high-quality, evidence-based approach to treatment. Our daily rehab schedule allows patients to try new experiences and activities and participate in therapy. The number of therapy sessions you participate in might vary depending on whether you are part of a residential treatment program or an outpatient program.
We recognize that there are multiple types of treatment that are effective for different people. That’s why we evaluate each of our clients on an ongoing basis to ensure they are getting the most out of treatment and that they are reaching their goals. You deserve to know your options and have a say in the path you’re building toward your future. We work together to develop a personalized treatment plan for everyone in our care and adjust the plans as needed as your treatment progresses. We’re here to provide the bricks, but you’re the one who lays them.
In addition to being backed by evidence, our approach is holistic. We don’t just focus on one part of substance use, we help build back every piece. We want to heal more than just your mind, we also heal your body and spirit.
The term “holistic” has many connotations in today’s society. When you hear the word, you may think of pseudoscience or healing without doctors.
That’s not what holistic is. By definition, holistic refers to a belief or treatment that takes the entire person into account as opposed to just one component. It’s a whole-person approach. We don’t treat symptoms, we treat you.
Evidence-based therapy involves scientifically proven treatment methods. For an approach to treatment to be termed “evidence-based,” there needs to be research that shows that it is effective.
Some of the qualities of evidence-based therapy include:
By utilizing this as the backbone of our treatment, we continue to provide the best options for our clients. This means we continue to be open to new research but won’t jump into something that we don’t see results in. You can trust that anything we offer is something that we believe in and have seen that it’s effective.
Since therapy is an integral part of treatment at San Antonio Recovery Center, we incorporate therapy sessions into each day in our center. These approaches are utilized in both our individual therapy settings as well as our group therapy settings. Let’s talk about the specific types of therapy so you can know what to expect during your time in treatment with us.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a direct, hands-on approach to addressing your concerns. It works by identifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and reworking them into something beneficial. It also helps you better understand how your thoughts form, how triggers impact you, and how these culminate in your overall well-being.
Dialectal behavioral therapy, or DBT, was built off the foundation of CBT but specializes in emotional regulation and recognition. Through DBT, you’ll learn how to better identify how your emotions form, how they impact your thoughts and actions, and how to better regulate them. DBT also covers essential mental skills like distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness.
Trauma therapy is a field that covers a broad spectrum of therapies designed to help individuals cope with the aftermath of trauma. Trauma can refer to any experience or event representing a real or perceived threat to your life, body, or sanity. Many people have lived through trauma without realizing it or without noticing how deeply it's impacting them. Those recovering from SUDs often are holding onto unaddressed trauma and triggers. Through this treatment, you will learn how to pinpoint triggers and gain the tools to manage them if they occur.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR, is a therapeutic modality that uses a series of rapid eye movements to help process trauma. Through this approach, individuals can more easily discuss heavy topics to safely work through them. All of our staff who offer this treatment have gone through extensive training to be able to do so. While it’s most often used to treat PTSD, it can help with other distressing and traumatic memories, which are seen in various SUDs and mental health conditions.
Family therapy is pivotal to lasting recovery for a large majority of people. As we mentioned earlier, SUDs impact not just the individual but those who care about them, too. Through family therapy, not only do we work to heal those relationships, but also help family members find healing, too. It provides education and support to loved ones while strengthening an important, already-established support system for those in recovery.
Our dual-diagnosis treatment program is designed for those who are seeking healing from both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. With more than 1 in 3 Texas residents reporting living with symptoms of depression or anxiety, this combination is more common than you think.
Our dual diagnosis program is backed by the same evidence-based, holistic approach to healing. It’s offered through all levels of care and utilizes the same quality therapeutic options as our standard SUD recovery program.
